It should never have come to this of course. Social housing should never have been sidelined as a planning gain concession from developers of luxury investment apartments for the international rich. The issue of one door for the rich and one for the poor should never have arisen in the first place. But we are were we are and that means an increasingly polarised and segregated capital city and truly, if we put up with poor doors we will put up with anything.
The weekly poor door picket of One Commercial Street has been running for the last three months and largely because of the efforts of a handful of activists some of whom are not in the first flush of youth or in the best of health. At last night's picket, with some 80, 000 at the earlier TUC march and a couple of thousand supposed anarchist just up the road at the bookfair, a large turnout had been expected. Well, perhaps a hundred and fifty of us did turn up. It could have been bigger but was lively, spontaneous affair with a couple of bands, the Durham Miners Association and the irrepressible Women's Death Brigade keeping the coppers on their toes. Well done all.

Only around 200 on a day where most of the left were active in London. As the political leaders say, 'lessons must be learned'. Perhaps Class War should try self examination, especially as this kind of support suggests only a small percentage of committed left will back them in the general election. Maybe its time to break out from the increasingly unattractive left; its centralised leadership, unquestioning support for doctrines which are incompatible with working class values, as in the left-conservative Islam alliance (see LU, Respect, UAF, Russell Brand, and many anarchist groups). Even when Martin Wright spoke against Isis, a Class War leader responded with the usual sanitization argument where the evils of Isis was equated with all religions, concluding with the ridiculous argument that it is all about US demand for oil. This tripe won't wash: it ignors the historical fact that generations of working class people tamed Christianity which has yet to happen with Islam, not to mention those gentle Christian Socialists with wooden floors who go on CND demo's. As for the US and oil - these nutters in the ME were beheading each other before Europeans found America. And let's forget CW's naive enthusiasm for the Arab Spring. Still steeped in old style communism, ignoring the body count of over 100 million dead thanks to Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot et al. Equally important is a need for Class War to break out of its college boy stunt image and identify with class politics. Which is more than beginnng and ending every sentence with the expletive 'farkin 'ell'. And a little more honesty about Oxbridge. Few working people, with sons and daughters aiming for university, buy the Pol Pot hostility to higher education. Maybe if Class War can accept democracy within its own ranks, ease up on censorship, with less calls on their FB page for no platformism, and put granddad's punk music to rest, it might attract ordinary voters.
